Johnson First Repeat NASCAR Late Model Winner at Music City Motorplex

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Johnson First Repeat NASCAR Late Model Winner at Music City Motorplex

June 14, 2008, Nashville, Tenn. – It was a night of non-stop action at the Music City Motorplex as fans witnessed the return of Sterling Marlin in the Coors Light Silver Bullet machine, saw cars flipped on their tops,  finishing races backward  and the first repeat NASCAR Late Model winner.

Mt. Juliet’s Andy Johnson became the first repeat winner in the NASCAR Late Model division at the Motorplex Saturday night, leading from the green to the checkered flag in a car that looked simply unbeatable all night. Sterling Marlin’s return to the track where he won three championships was not as stellar as he hoped, finishing eighth in the Coors Light machine in his return. The battle of the night was between the 650 WSM Dollar General machine of Skip McCord and points leader Dillon Oliver for the third spot. The two ran hard, side by side for most of the race until McCord was finally able to get around Oliver on lap forty-three to take the spot. By then it was too late for McCord to catch the car of Michael Driskell, who finished second, followed by McCord, Oliver, and Chevy White, who backed up last week’s victory with a top five finish.

Bobby Buttrey and Terry Hayes led the NASCAR Super Trucks to the green flag and rookie Bobby Buttrey’s string of recent bad luck came to an end as he took home his second win of the season. Buttrey grabbed the lead on the first lap and never looked back, leading all forty laps. Late in the race, the lapped truck of Stacey Crain ran Buttrey up the track off turn two and allowed Jess Williams to catch up, but Williams had nothing for the truck of Buttrey.  Williams finished a close second, with Daniel Bolden, Larry Ryman and Terry Hayes rounding out the top five. Points leader Daniel Victory took a hit in the standings with a last place finish.

The NASCAR Grand Nationals put on the show of the night as Wayne White and Lee Goddard spun coming off turn four on the last lap, allowing Eddie Taylor to race by and pick up his first win of the year. White made a complete 360° turn on the front straightaway and came across the line backward to finish ninth. Goddard and White had been racing hard over the last laps of the race, and it seemed that Taylor knew what was about to happen as he seemed content to hang back in third and allow White and Goddard to take each other out. Goddard managed to hang on for a second place finish, Howard Tucker was third, Jeffrey Belt finished fourth, and Tim Haggard came in fifth.

The sheet metal was flying left and right as Jeremy Newman picked up his third win of 2008 in the rough and tumble ThunderStox division. Only ten of the sixteen cars that started were able to finish the race that featured eight cautions and the cars of Taylor Ryman and Joshua Hood being parked after an altercation on the track. Matt Barnes, Mark Ryman, Dale Travis and Charles Goddard, Jr. rounded out the top five.

INEX Legends Pro Master points leader Kevin Rollins took a wild ride on the last lap of their twenty lap feature race, as he got together with the car of James Fowlkes in a battle for the lead off turn one and ended up sliding through turn two on his roof. Thankfully, Rollins was unhurt and able to walk away from the crash. Sanders managed to hang on for the win, followed by Josh Berry, Tyler Cordell, Kenny Summers and Wade “Ten-A-C” Slatton.

In the INEX Legends Semi Pro division, Giles Martin raced to his second win of 2008. It was a three man race for the win, with Martin battling points leader Brandon Summers and Cody Fernett to take home the checkered flag. Summers finished second, followed by Fernett, Michael Bolden and AJ Carlisi.

Ricky McIlwain continued to dominate in the Dwarf division, claiming his third victory in five races this season. Timothy Lunn, David Ring, Michael Wood and Allen Ring finished out the top five.

In the Bandolero division, Zach McLean raced to the best birthday gift that he could have asked for – his first win of the season. McLean was followed by Layne Clifton, Sean Hosey, Larua Gentry and Steven Layne in the top five.

Racing action will continue June 20 and 21 at the Music City Motorplex. Friday Night Drags will resume June 20 at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday Night Thunder will kick off at 6:30 p.m. June 21.
