Music City Motorsports Institute

Overview

The Institute is designed to provide the educational opportunity, practical experience, training and equipment that will provide all participating students with the tools necessary to secure meaningful employment in the Motor Sports Industry, regardless of race, gender or financial resources.

While various Motor Sports sanctioning bodies, including NASCAR, have initiated diversity programs, these programs are targeted to teenagers, and are not reaching children at the elementary school level.  Today, race teams are signing drivers as young as 15 to driver development programs, so a teenager, without experience, has limited opportunities.  The goal of the Motor Sports Institute is to fill that void and begin educating young people about the sport as an industry at the elementary school level.

The opportunities in the Motor Sports Industry are not limited to becoming a driver, but include a wide range of vocations, including, but not limited to:

Nashville, the Music City, has a proud history of producing Motor Sports leaders, both on and off the track, having gained experience at Nashville’s own Fairground’s Music City Motorplex.  Graduates include Nextel Cup Track Presidents Eddie Gossage and Ed Clark, and drivers Marty Robbins, Darrell Waltrip, Sterling Marlin, Bobby Hamilton Sr., Bobby Hamilton Jr., the Green Brothers, Casey Atwood, Chad Chaffin and most recently, Willie Allen.

Unlike other sports, Motor Sports does not require great physical strength, speed or size of its athletes, opening the door to many that will not have the opportunity to exceed in such sports as Football, Baseball, Basketball or Hockey.

The Music City Motor Sports Institute introduces elementary school age children to the world of motor sports at no cost, as well as train pre-teens and teenagers for a reasonable fee, with scholarship programs offered to assist those individuals that need assistance.

Level I Children’s Entry Level Program

Children, ages 5-7, would be introduced to Motor Sports utilizing “F-5 Kidracer” vehicles pictured below.  In order to participate in the program, the children are required to read a specified number of books as determined by each school.

These vehicles were designed for children 4-7, weighing up to 90 pounds. The F5 is very maneuverable in small spaces and allows racing wheel to wheel with other drivers.  The F5 features positive offset steering, plus ackerman steering, giving children a good feel of the steering and control of the car.  (See Exhibit A for Specifications).

A program can be set up to takes these cars to school gyms, playgrounds and/or parking lots.

Each Event Coordinator can conduct three two-hour sessions per day, allowing up to sixty children a per session to have twenty minutes of driving time per session, or a total of five hundred and forty children per day for all thee Event Coordinators.

A curriculum for each age group can be developed and utilized for each session.

Level II / Pre-Teens (Eight to Twelve)

Pre-teenagers, ages 8-12, can continue their Motor Sports education utilizing Go-Karts such as the Gatormoto Road Rat pictured below. Powered by a 6.5hp 4 Stroke Honda Clone, engine, this Go-Kart has a load capacity of 300 pounds.  (See Exhibit B for Specifications)

Given the weight, size and speed of these vehicles, the facilities at the Fairground’s Music City are required.  Using the infield, the 1/4 mile oval and the back pit area, a variety of courses configurations are possible.

Given the weather condition and school schedules, the course can be offered during evenings in the spring and fall and during the day and/or evenings during the summer months, with a season beginning in April and ending in October.  During these seven months up to approximately twenty eight schools may be available, accommodating a total of five hundred and sixty students per season.

Level III / (Thirteen to Fifteen)

The same Go-Karts used in Level II are utilized for students participating in the Level II program.  Students must successfully complete the Level II program before being allowed to participate in Level III.

The Level III program consists of seven race series, each consisting of four race days, scheduled for Sundays from April through October.

Each race series allows participation of twenty students, or a total of one hundred and forty over the course of the season.
